Volunteer Preparation

Since Uchuculin is located in the Ecuadorian Amazon, the weather is generally hot, but it varies with cooler days, too. Rain is not constant, but certainly part of life in the rainforest.

We recommend you bring the following things for a comfortable stay:

  • Binoculars
  • Flashlight, candles, and matches
  • Sun block, a cap, or a hat
  • Bug repellent
  • Medicine kit and personal prescriptions
  • Raincoat or poncho (preferably rubber)
  • Camera, film, and batteries
  • Long and short sleeved shirts
  • Long pants
  • Sneakers, hiking shoes, and rubber boots
  • Bathing suit and sandals
  • Small backpack for excursions
  • Coins for tips, etc.

Uchuculin is located 45 minutes by bus or taxi from Tena, which is a large town and has all the necessities you will need including food, toiletries, Internet access, phones, doctors, and recreation.

Volunteers should have, as a minimum, a basic level of Spanish or Kichwa to be able to communicate effectively with the community.
